HISTORY OF ITALY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: FROM THE FIRST WORLD WAR (1915) TO THE END OF THE FIRST REPUBLIC (1992)
PRESENTATION AND RECIPIENTS
This course introduces the participant to the events that marked Italy from the First World War up to the 1990s.
It is only through the knowledge of this historical period that it is possible to understand the current dynamics of Italian society. The presentation of the events is followed by reflections on the vocabulary and exercises on the contents with in-depth grammar and interactive activities. The recipients are foreigners with a good level of knowledge of the Italian language (C1-C2) interested in learning more about the historical and cultural evolution of Italian society.
COURSE CONTENT
Italy in the Great War. The First World War: the watershed between the long nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some new elements: trenches, positional warfare, total warfare, women and children at war. The post-war period: social, economic and cultural consequences after the Peace of Versailles (the punitive peace)The 1920s and the affirmation of fascism in Italy. Affirmation of fascism in Italy: from the march on Rome to the Matteotti crime (1922-25); the “very fascist laws” and the “open face” dictatorship (1925-1930); the Thirties and the consensus. Discussions on the characteristics of totalitarian systems; notes on Nazism and Stalinism.
The Second World War. Brief overview of how Hitler led Germany to war; total, world, ideological and extermination war; the Shoah. Interactive discussion of new terms / concepts. Italy in the Second World War. 1943 and the fall of fascism. The Resistance and the formation of parties.
End of the European world. Italy in the New Economic Order: Centrality of the USA; the cold war and the world divided into blocs: communism and planning in the east, democracy and capitalism in the west; UN and the birth of the EEC. The fall of the Berlin Wall: 9 November 1989 and the end of the USSR: 26 December 1991.
Republican Italy. The formation of the party system (as early as 1943); the first free elections – June 2, 1946 – the Constituent Assembly and the Constitution (characters and inspiring themes). De Gasperi and the elections of April 18, 1948. The politics of centrism.
The “economic miracle”. From reconstruction to changes in society (the car, the Vespa, household appliances, television …). Gap between north and south. The reforms and protests of the 1960s.
Italy from the “years of lead”. The political crisis of the seventies; right-wing terrorism and massacres; left-wing terrorism; from the “historical compromise” to the Moro crime (1978). The massacre at the Bologna station (2 August 1980).
The end of the First Republic. Tangentopoli and the end of traditional parties. The collapse of communism and the Italian left. The storm of Tangentopoli. The end of traditional parties. New men: Bossi, Berlusconi. The emergence of the “mafia question”. The death of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.

8 online meetings of 90 minutes for a total of 12 hours of lessons on the MEET platform.

STORIA D’ITALIA NEL NOVECENTO: DALLA PRIMA GUERRA MONDIALE (1915) ALLA FINE DELLA PRIMA REPUBBLICA (1992)
PRESENTAZIONE E DESTINATARI
Questo corso introduce il partecipante agli avvenimenti che hanno segnato l’Italia dalla Prima Guerra Mondiale fino agli anni 90.
È solo attraverso la conoscenza di questo periodo storico che è possibile capire le dinamiche attuali della società italiana. La presentazione degli eventi è seguita da riflessioni sul lessico ed esercitazioni sui contenuti con approfondimenti grammaticali ed attività interattive. I destinatari sono stranieri con un buon livello di conoscenza della lingua italiana (C1-C2) interessati a conoscere meglio l’evoluzione storica e culturale della società italiana.
CONTENUTI DETTAGLIATI DEL CORSO
L’Italia nella Grande Guerra. La Prima guerra mondiale: spartiacque tra il lungo Ottocento e il Novecento. Alcuni elementi di novità: trincea, guerra di posizione, guerra totale, donne e bambini in guerra. Il dopoguerra: conseguenze sociali, economiche e culturali dopo la pace di Versailles (la pace punitiva).
Gli anni Venti e l’affermazione del fascismo in Italia. Affermazione del fascismo in Italia: dalla marcia su Roma al delitto Matteotti (1922-25); le “leggi fascistissime” e la dittatura “a viso aperto” (1925-1930); gli anni Trenta e il consenso. Discussioni sulle caratteristiche dei sistemi totalitari; cenni su nazismo e stalinismo.
La Seconda guerra mondiale. Breve quadro di come Hitler portò la Germania alla guerra; guerra totale, mondiale, ideologica e di sterminio; la Shoah. Discussione interattiva su termini/concetti nuovi. L’Italia nella Seconda guerra mondiale. Il 1943 e la caduta del fascismo. La Resistenza e la formazione dei partiti.
Fine del mondo europeo. L’Italia nel Nuovo ordine economico: centralità degli USA; la guerra fredda e il mondo diviso in blocchi: comunismo e pianificazione a est, democrazia e capitalismo a Ovest; ONU e la nascita della CEE. La caduta del muro di Berlino: 9 novembre 1989 e la fine dell’URSS: 26 dicembre 1991.
L’Italia repubblicana. La formazione del sistema dei partiti (già dal 1943); le prime elezioni libere -2 giugno 1946-l’Assemblea Costituente e la Costituzione (caratteri e temi ispiratori). De Gasperi e le elezioni del 18 aprile 1948. Le politiche del centrismo.
Il “miracolo economico”. Dalla ricostruzione ai cambiamenti nella società (l’automobile, la Vespa, gli elettrodomestici, la televisione…). Divario tra nord e sud. Le riforme e le contestazioni degli anni Sessanta.
L’Italia dagli “anni di piombo”. La crisi politica degli anni Settanta; il terrorismo di destra e le stragi; il terrorismo di sinistra; dal “compromesso storico” al delitto Moro (1978). La strage alla stazione di Bologna (2agosto 1980).
La fine della Prima Repubblica. Tangentopoli e la fine dei partiti tradizionali. Il crollo del comunismo e la sinistra italiana. La bufera di Tangentopoli. La fine dei partiti tradizionali. Uomini nuovi: Bossi, Berlusconi. L’emergenza della “questione mafia”. La morte di Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino nel 1992.
